How to Read Our Grade Cards | Grandma's Wisdom Explained with Stars (Evidence) and Colors (Safety)

Watch the video

Ever wondered what the stars and colored circles at the end of our videos mean? On Grandma's Wisdom, every dish gets a simple card that sums up two things: how much research backs it, and how safe it is. Here's how to read it.

About This Series

We share one dish or drink at a time, handed down in grandmothers' kitchens around the world. Weekdays bring a new recipe, Saturdays a world comparison, and Sundays a recap of the week.

Stars = Evidence

Mark Meaning
★ Traditional use only / lab or animal research level
★★ Some research, but results are limited or mixed
★★★ Confirmed in studies with people

One star doesn't mean a food is bad. It means people have loved it for a long time, but science hasn't confirmed it yet.

Colors = Safety

Mark Meaning
🟢 Safe when eaten in normal food amounts
🟡 Take care with large amounts or certain people (such as those on medication)
🔴 Shared for the story only — please don't try it

Let's Read an Example

If a card shows Evidence ★ / Safety 🟢, it means: "Not proven by science, but perfectly fine to enjoy as food." Go ahead and savor it.

The One Caution

When you see a 🟡 yellow card, please read the "one caution" in the video and blog all the way to the end. It means there's something to watch for if you eat a lot of it or take certain medicines. 🔴 Red is for enjoying the old story only.

Sources

The grading scale is this series' own standard. Sources for each dish are listed in full on that episode's blog post.
