How Many Ginkgo Nuts Are Safe? | 'Ginkgo for Coughs,' a Grandma Tradition and Today's One Caution
Watch the video
On chilly autumn nights when a cough wouldn't quit, Grandma would roast a pan of ginkgo nuts. They're a true taste of fall, but there's one thing worth knowing about them today.
Where It Comes From
In Japan, Korea, and China, roasted ginkgo nuts were long believed to be good for coughs and for bedwetting at night. Some families ate several roasted nuts every day.
Grandma's Way and Today's Way
| Grandma's way | Today's way | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's eaten | Several roasted nuts every day, "to stop a cough" or "for bedwetting" | Not as a folk remedy. Just a few nuts added to a dish. Skip them for children. |
Why the change? The toxin in ginkgo nuts (MPN) is not destroyed by cooking. Eating about 10 cooked nuts at once can cause acute poisoning (seizures).
Do we lose anything? There are no human studies showing that ginkgo nuts help coughs or bedwetting. The poisoning risk, on the other hand, is clear. So today's way is to enjoy them as a seasonal flavor, not as medicine.
The Good Part
- You learn an old custom, and how to enjoy it safely
What Science Says
Ginkgo nuts contain a toxin with a structure similar to vitamin B6 (MPN, also called ginkgotoxin), which can cause seizures. Symptoms appear 1 to 12 hours after eating: vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, and seizures. There is no antidote. Cooking does not destroy this toxin, and eating about 10 cooked nuts at once can cause acute poisoning. Children are especially vulnerable, and older adults should take care too. This is something we've learned since Grandma's day. Keep her tradition, and add just this one piece of new knowledge.

How We Recommend Enjoying It
Don't eat a lot like the old remedy. Keep it to a few nuts a day, added to a dish as a seasonal flavor. Skip them for children.
Please Be Careful About This
- Don't copy the "good for coughs" habit of eating lots of them. Keep it to a few a day, and skip them for children. Ginkgo nuts contain a toxin (MPN) that can cause seizures, and eating about 10 cooked nuts at once can cause acute poisoning. Children are especially vulnerable.
- Don't assume cooked means safe, and never eat them raw. Heat does not destroy this toxin, and raw nuts are even more toxic.
- If vomiting, dizziness, or seizures happen within 1 to 12 hours of eating them, go to a hospital right away. There is no antidote, so getting prompt care for the symptoms matters.
General Cautions
- No general cautions apply to this episode. Please remember the cautions above.
